Nobody's as hip as we are.

(Taken from an ad series that ran several years ago - my mom kept it in her "treasure" box because she says that, to her, it represents what the Army stands for)

What do you want to know about the drug scene? The counter culture? Street people? And street talk?

Your friends like to wear old clothes from our thrift shops? Our friends have to. Your friends into alcohol AND drugs? Our are dying from it. You have pals who are always broke, bummed out and up-to-here with society? Ours are destitute, schizophrenic and suicidal. Pregnant teenagers? Tell us about it.

And all too often we're the only thing standing betweenour friends and real tragedy. Us in our dowdy unfiorms and old-fashioned attitudes.

Yes somehow we do it.

Author Peter Drucker says, "The Salvaiton Army probably does a better job with the poor than anyone else."

"And frugally," adds Fortune (11/9/87), "Of each dollar it receives, 86 cents goes to the needy." In a business where 50 or 60 cents is good enough.

Yeah, we're religious. But we're no fanatics. You can't do what we do and be a pollyanna, a goody-goody or holier-than-thou.

but hipper-than-thou? Probably.

Places you wouldn't venture into,we live and work. People you wouldn't touch, we embrace. Scenes you couldn't look at, we live with. And deal with. Every day.

So go ahead and kids us all you want to about "saving souls." But for God's sake, help us save lives.

WE'RE FIGHTING FOR YOU.

(My mom's favorite line - People you wouldn't touch, we embrace.)
