Have I posted about the shelter that is done in this town yet? I'm too tired to go through the old posts .. .
Each night, homeless "guests" as they like to call them, meet at a day center by 4:00pm (opens at 1pm) and they can take showers and get signed in, etc. At 4pm, they get on a bus and they go to a local church -different each night. That night, the church hosts them - feeding them (perhaps with the help of another church), keeping them company, bedding them. The next morning, they feed them, put them all back on the bus, and then clean up after they leave.
The next night, its repeated. The community doesn't have to have a permanent building, the faith organization get to do what they are supposed to do, everyone plays a part, and it works. Wow - I've never seen anything like it. Well, I haven't seen it yet but it starts october 15 for the winter season.
I met with the pastor who organized the churches and he looked over our building to see if it would work. We are going to take every 5th Friday night and maybe a few of the hardtofill days. It won't be easy because we really don't have anybody to help us do it - it's just us right now. I'd like to say the church will help except there is only one other family. But we have several young adults - so maybe we can pull it off.
